Golden-hour
Golden Hour views

Ever noticed how sunset times shift with the seasons? That’s not your imagination; sunset timings
depend on geographic location, time of year, and the Earth’s gentle tilt. Whether you’re standing
on the peaks of the Grand Canyon or the valleys of Yellowstone, sunset times are ever-changing.

How to Find Out the time of Sunset?

But when is sunset exactly? To stay ahead of the curve, you’ll want to check what time sunset is
using online tools such as Time and Date or apps like Solar Watch. Knowing your local sunset
times can be the difference between catching those glowing final rays and missing them entirely.

Whether you’re searching for photography hotspots, a romantic experience, or simply enjoying
the end of a great drive with SIXT, timing is everything

Golden Hour: Sunset Times to Capture Nature’s Best Light

Golden hour is that brief window just before sunset, when the sun touches the horizon and
everything it touches glows. In summer, it can linger; in winter, it vanishes quickly. That’s why
knowing the time of sunset is the key to unlocking this stunning natural display.

If you’re chasing golden hour, arrive early, position yourself strategically, and let nature do the rest.
Whether you’re capturing it through your camera lens or the passenger window on a scenic drive,
golden hour is a moment worth planning for and one that’s better paired with the comfort and
freedom of a SIXT rental car.

The Perfect Weather for Sunset

Want to catch a showstopping sky? Don’t forget to check the weather. Climate plays a huge role
in how colorful, or clouded, your sunset experience will be. Clear skies are beautiful, but a few
high-altitude clouds can scatter the sunlight.

Factors like humidity, air quality, and pollution all affect the visibility and color intensity of a
sunset. Moderate humidity can amplify the richness of colors, while excessive haze or pollution
might dim the display.

Monitor forecasts, looking for mid-level clouds around 20-25% coverage near sunset times. Pair
that with the perfect location, and you’ve got front-row seats to a mesmerizing spectacle. And
with a SIXT rental, getting there becomes part of the adventure.

Top Tips for Viewing the Perfect Sunset

Finding that epic sunset isn’t just about luck. Location can make or break your viewing
experience. Mountainous areas, wide-open fields, and coastal viewpoints offer the clearest and
most dramatic frames. Scout out the best sunset locations in the U.S. with our sunset location
guide.

Timing is just as crucial. Aim to arrive at your spot 30–60 minutes before the time of sunset. Not
only will this give you time to settle in and soak up the moment, but you’ll also witness the color
transitions that happen before and after the sun dips over the horizon.

The temperature can drop quickly as the sun sets. Stay cozy with a blanket, some snacks, and if
you’re venturing off the beaten path, make sure to carry a flashlight, a map, and let someone
know your plans. Staying a little past sunset time can reveal post-sunset hues that are just as
captivating and often less crowded.

Planning Your Sunset Drive with SIXT U.S.

Timing is everything when it comes to viewing the perfect sunset, so a reliable vehicle and
smooth journey are paramount. With SIXT, cruise with ease around Big Bend National Park or
Utah’s Canyonlands National Park for the perfect spot.

SIXT offers a premium selection of vehicles, from convertibles for open-air bliss to SUVs suitable
for mountainous areas. You choose the backdrop, we provide the ride. Plan your scenic route to
sync perfectly with sunset times, and you’ll not just be going for a drive, you’ll be making
memories on the road.

Your Ultimate Guide to Sunset Photography in the US

A sunset is one of the most beautiful sights you can witness. If you’ve ever seen the sky melt into streaks of orange, pink, and purple, you already know why it’s worth chasing. But snapping the perfect sunset photo? That takes more than just being in the right place at the right time.

Sunset photography is about understanding light, adjusting your settings, and knowing what equipment you need to get the perfect shot.

Whether you’re road-tripping with SIXT or catching golden hour from your own backyard, this guide will help you take sunset photos worth keeping.

Understanding the Magic of Golden Hour

Golden hour is the brief period before sunset when the light softens and warms, making it one of the best times to shoot. Shadows stretch, contrast levels out, and the scene takes on a more balanced, even tone. It’s not just a nice backdrop. The softer light helps reduce harsh highlights and makes both landscapes and portraits easier to capture clearly.

While golden hour technically lasts about an hour, the magic changes minute by minute. The lower the sun gets, the more intense the colors become, oranges deepen, skies turn peachy, and textures start to pop. If you’re shooting, this is the moment to play with silhouettes, lens flare, or reflections.

And the best part? You don’t need a fancy setup. Just good timing, a little patience, and a clear view of the horizon.

Sunset Photography Top Tips

Arrive Early

Finding the right sunset timing is key, so scout your spot well in advance. You’ll want time to frame your shot, check your angles, and fine-tune your settings without feeling rushed. Once the sun starts dropping, everything changes fast, the light shifts, shadows move, and the best moments can disappear in seconds. The earlier you’re ready, the more you can make the most of that golden light.

Focus on Composition

A stunning sunset is great, but the story you tell around it is just as important. Think about what’s in front of you, whether it’s a tree, a person, a city skyline, or a beach path. Adding something to the scene gives your shot depth and drama.

● Use the rule of thirds: Place the horizon in the top or bottom third of the frame, never just straight in the middle.
● Look for reflections: in water, windows, or shiny surfaces can add more texture and drama to your shot.

Embrace the Silhouette

Backlit scenes are ideal for creating striking silhouettes. To capture one, position your subject between you and the sun, then drop the exposure just a bit. The result? A crisp, dark shape that stands out against the glowing sky.

Play with White Balance

Sunset colors are warm, but sometimes your camera might ‘correct’ that warmth automatically. Switch to Cloudy or Shade white balance settings to keep (or even boost) the golden tones. On phones, look for white balance sliders in manual mode.

Top 5 Best US sunset Photography Destinations

While social media often highlights the same popular sunset spots, some of the most breathtaking views for sunset photography are hidden in quieter corners of the U.S. From volcanic craters to river canyons and the valleys of Yellowstone, these five under-the-radar gems offer unforgettable sunsets without the crowds.

Hawaii-sunset
Sunset in Hawaii, USA

1. Calcite Springs Overlook, Wyoming

Perched above the winding Yellowstone River, Calcite Springs Overlook is a top destination for capturing breathtaking sunsets. The vivid blues of the river contrast with the lush greenery, creating a stunning visual experience, perfect for photographers. While it doesn’t get much social media buzz, the view is unforgettable. For the best shots, visit in early fall when Wyoming’s skies are clearest, allowing the canyon to glow with golden hues as the sun sets.

2. Skagit Valley, Washington

Skagit Valley offers one of the most unique sunset settings in the country, with winding waterways, distant mountain peaks, and vibrant tulip fields. This quiet valley stays off the radar despite its beauty. The ideal time for shooting sunsets is from early July to late September, when cloud cover is at its lowest and the fiery sky creates a spectacular backdrop for the landscape.

3. Kilauea Crater, Hawaii

For those looking to photograph a sunset like no other, Kilauea Crater on the Big Island of Hawaii is a hidden gem. The crater’s vastness makes for an otherworldly scene as the sun sets, igniting the sky with molten gold and deep crimson. Despite its minimal online presence, Kilauea offers an unparalleled, secluded experience for sunset photography. Plan your visit outside the rainy season (April through September) for the clearest skies and the most vivid sunset shots.

4. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Another Hawaiian gem, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, offers dramatic sunset views over a volcanic landscape. With a growing number of TikTok searches, it’s becoming a top spot for sunset enthusiasts. The best time for photography is from mid-May to late September when the skies are clear and the sunsets’ fiery hues mirror the park’s raw, geothermal energy, providing a striking backdrop for your photos.

5. Jenne Farm, Washington

Tucked away on Whidbey Island, Jenne Farm is a peaceful retreat perfect for capturing serene sunset shots. The rolling hills and expansive skies make for an idyllic landscape, especially in late spring and summer when the sky is bathed in warm, tranquil hues. While it’s not widely known on social media, Jenne Farm’s sunsets are stunning and perfect for photographers seeking a more serene, undisturbed location.

Essential Items for Your Sunset Photography

You don’t need a pro kit to shoot beautiful sunsets, but the right tools can help you unlock even
more creative potential. Here’s what to pack:

Camera or Smartphone

● DSLR or Mirrorless: Full control, better low-light performance, and interchangeable
lenses.
● Smartphone: Newer models have incredible sensors and Pro modes. Just don’t forget
to clean your lens.

Tripod

Even the steadiest hands can struggle in low light. A tripod keeps things crisp, especially for
long exposure shots or timelapses.

● Compact travel tripod: Light, easy to carry, perfect for road trips.
● Smartphone tripod: Affordable and often includes remote shutters.

Lens Choices

● Wide-angle (10–24mm): Ideal for big landscapes and dramatic skies.
● Telephoto (70–200mm): Great for isolating the sun or zooming in on distant
silhouettes.

Smartphones benefit from external clip-on lenses if you want to get fancy.

Remote Shutter or Timer

Avoid camera shake by using a remote shutter release or setting a 2-second timer

Editing Apps & Software

Sunset shots come alive in post. Use editing tools to tweak exposure, contrast, highlights, and color balance.
● Desktop: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One
● Mobile: Lightroom Mobile, Snapseed, VSCO

Whether you’re chasing the perfect sunset across Wyoming’s stunning landscapes or capturing the golden hues of a Hawaiian volcano, the right vehicle can make all the difference. With SIXT’s wide range of rental options, you can easily get to the best sunset spots in comfort and style. Why Yellowstone National Park is a Sunset Seeker’s Paradise

Yellowstone National Park is one of the top sunset destinations in the country. Widely renowned as the world’s first national park, Yellowstone is home to a diverse natural landscape, with mountainous terrain, cascading rivers, and unique hydrothermal activity. Sprawling atop a dormant volcano, geothermal marvels create unforgettable natural wonders, from steaming geysers to mud springs, creating an unmatched landscape for a unique golden hour.

Sunsets here aren’t just a visual treat, they’re a sensory experience. Watch as steam rises from vibrant hot springs while the fading sun casts orange, pink, and lavender hues across the expansive skies. With more than 2.2 million acres of wilderness, Yellowstone provides unobstructed views that allow nature to take center stage every evening.

Top Sunset Viewing Spots in Yellowstone National Park

The sheer size of Yellowstone National Park means there’s no shortage of perfect places to watch the sun set. Whether you’re a sunset hotspot photographer, wildlife enthusiast, or seeking a romantic viewpoint, these major sunset locations promise spectacular views. Access these easily with SIXT rental, it has never been easier to explore the park at your own pace with the freedom to follow your own itinerary.

Lake Butte Overlook

This scenic overlook sits high above Yellowstone Lake and offers panoramic views of the water and the Absaroka Mountains. As the sun begins to lower, the lake mirrors the vibrant colors of the sky, transforming into a breathtaking palette of golds and purples. It’s especially beautiful in late summer when the skies are clearest. The overlook is easily accessible by car with nearby parking, and the short walk to the viewpoint is manageable for most visitors.

Artist Point, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Perched along the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Artist Point offers a breathtaking panorama of the canyon’s vividly colored walls and the thunderous Lower Falls. When daylight fades, the canyon walls glow with rich amber tones, and the mist from the Lower Falls captures the final light of day. It’s an exceptional hotspot for photos and also a serene place for quiet reflection. Plan to arrive early to secure a good spot, as this area tends to attract crowds. This viewpoint also has easy access along a pathway, a short walk from the parking lot.

Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook

One of the most colorful and dramatic features in Yellowstone, Grand Prismatic Spring, becomes even more vivid as the sun begins to set. The overlook, accessible via the Fairy Falls Trail, provides a bird’s-eye view of the spring’s radiant rings. Although the trail is moderately challenging, the experience is well worth it. Wearing sturdy shoes and planning ensures you’ll be able to enjoy the journey and the stunning view ahead.

Madison River Area

Just west of Madison Junction, this peaceful section of the park offers a quieter sunset experience. The Madison River reflects the soft colors of the evening sky, while elk, bison, and waterfowl frequently appear at dusk. Multiple pullouts along the road provide convenient places to stop and enjoy the view, and the gentle terrain makes it ideal for visitors of all activity levels.

Lamar Valley

Often referred to as “America’s Serengeti”, Lamar Valley is a wide, open stretch of landscape where wildlife and wide-angle views dominate the scene. As the sun sets, this valley becomes a stage for golden-hour beauty, with herds of bison silhouetted against the glowing hills. Fewer visitors in the evening allow for a peaceful experience. A vehicle is essential for making the most of this location, especially if you’re chasing that perfect view.

Mammoth Hot Springs Upper Terrace

The Upper Terrace of Mammoth Hot Springs is a fascinating blend of geothermal activity and sculptural beauty. The terraced limestone formations seem to glow under the soft hues of sunset, while steam rises from the springs, creating a dreamy effect on the landscape. Booking with SIXT is easy, our premium cars, competitive rates and flexible pickup locations make your journey seamless from the moment you arrive.

Essential Tips for Capturing the Perfect Sunset

Watching a Yellowstone sunset is magical, but capturing it well takes a bit of preparation. Whether you’re using professional equipment or your smartphone, the following tips will help you make the most of the moment.

Permits and Fees

Yellowstone requires a standard entrance fee, with options for seven-day or annual passes. If you plan to visit multiple national parks, the America the Beautiful Pass offers exceptional value.

Best Time to Visit

The park is open year-round, but late spring through early fall offers accessible roads, moderate weather, and open facilities. For smaller crowds and crisp air, consider a visit in early June or late September. The best time of year to experience Yellowstone’s sunsets is between late spring and early fall. During these months, the weather is more stable, wildlife is active, and roads are generally clear of snow.

Timing

For the best time to view the perfect sunset, arrive 30 to 60 minutes before sunset so you can scout your location, set up your gear, and enjoy the changing light as it builds to its peak. Many spots fill up quickly, particularly in peak season, and lighting can change dramatically in minutes. Leaving extra time will allow you to set up, settle in, and enjoy the spectacle without feeling rushed.

Weather Considerations

The weather can shift rapidly, especially at higher elevations. Even in summer, temperatures can drop into the 40s at night. Be prepared with layered clothing, rain gear, and sun protection. Always check the local forecast before heading out for the day.

Photography Gear

A camera with manual settings, a stable tripod, and a wide-angle lens will allow you to control exposure and frame sweeping views. If you’re using a smartphone, enable night mode and consider using a small tripod to reduce shake and improve sharpness.

Accommodation

You’ll find options ranging from rustic campgrounds and historic lodges within the park to hotels, motels, and vacation rentals in gateway towns like West Yellowstone, Gardiner, and Cody. Booking early is essential during peak months.

Stay safe

Always remain on marked trails and boardwalks, especially in geothermal zones. Wildlife tends to be more active at dusk, so keep a safe distance and carry bear spray if you plan to venture into remote areas. Dressing in layers and bringing a headlamp or flashlight can also enhance your comfort and safety.

Respect others and the environment

Sunsets are shared experiences. Lower your voice, avoid blocking paths or views, and follow ‘leave no trace’ principles to preserve the park for future visitors.

Embrace the Sunset at Yellowstone National Park

Watching the sunset in Yellowstone National Park is a moment of connection with one of America’s most majestic natural landscapes. From geysers to rivers, valleys to peaks, the park reveals its softer side as the day comes to a close.

With the comfort and flexibility of a SIXT rental vehicle, you can craft a sunset experience that fits your own rhythm. Whether you’re chasing wildlife in Lamar Valley or finding serenity by Yellowstone Lake, every evening brings something unforgettable.

Don’t just visit Yellowstone. Explore it fully, linger longer, and let each sunset be the highlight of a trip you’ll never forget with SIXT at the wheel.

Miami, Florida, is famous for its gorgeous beaches, its Art Deco historic district, and its lively atmosphere. No matter your travel vibe, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Miami!

As the largest city in South Florida, though, finding parking in Miami can be a bit tricky sometimes, especially if you’re headed downtown or to the beach. But not to worry—we’re here to tell you where to find the best parking garages, street parking, and free parking in Miami. Whether you’re exploring Miami for several days or starting out on a South Florida road trip, read on for our expert tips.

Tips for parking in Miami

When you’re looking for parking in Miami, there are a few things unique to this city that will affect your search. Keep these general tips in mind:

  • Plan ahead: Miami hosts tons of events on any given day, so be sure to check the calendar to know which areas to avoid if possible—not only because of full lots and garages, but also because of price hikes.
  • High traffic: Downtown and South Beach tend to be the most crowded areas, so reserve parking in advance if you can.
  • Use apps: There are several mobile apps you can download to find parking in Miami on the go, like ParkMobile, PayByPhone and SpotHero. These apps show you available parking spaces in your area in real time.
  • Residential parking: Some residential zones in Miami require a permit to park there, so look for signs indicating this and never block driveways.
  • The heat: Miami is known for its hot weather, so try to park in garages or in the shade when possible.

So, pick up your vehicle at the SIXT branch at Miami airport or in Miami Beach and hit the road!

Where to find parking garages and lots in Miami

Parking garages are some of the most secure and convenient parking options in Miami. While garages might sometimes be more expensive than parking lots, they offer the perks of shade and added security. Garages should have signs at the entrance listing the cost, but be aware that there may be higher rates during special events.

There are plenty of parking garages in Miami, with many of them located in the downtown area or near other popular attractions. Miami is also home to both public and private parking garages, with the private ones usually being more expensive. Just be sure not to lose your ticket—you’ll need it to get out of the garage. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay a flat fee. Some garages also allow ticketless parking via an app, so it’s worth checking ahead for peace of mind.

Popular parking garages in Miami include the following:

  • 17th Street Garage: This public parking garage is located in South Beach, and rates tend to hover around $2 per hour, with a maximum daily rate of $20*. This garage also has EV charging stations.
  • Fifth & Alton Miami Beach Public Parking: This public garage also charges around $2 per hour* and is located on the southern side of Miami Beach near the bridge to the mainland. The maximum daily rate is $20*.
  • Miami-Dade Cultural Center Garage: This parking garage is located in the heart of downtown near Government Center, giving easy access to several highways and attractions. Rates start at $3 per half hour for up to 2.5 hours*.
  • Bayfront Parking: This garage is situated next to Bayfront Park along the coast, and the rate is a flat rate of $20*.

There are also plenty of parking lots in Miami, and while shade isn’t guaranteed, they might be cheaper than some of the garages you’ll come across.

Some lots in popular locations include the following:

  • Miami Beach Parking Lot: This lot is located at the south end of South Beach on Washington Avenue and costs $2 per hour*. If this lot is full, there are at least two more within a 5-minute drive.
  • You’ll find several private lots in the Wynwood area, including on the corner of NW 23rd and NW 5th, as well as off NW2nd behind the convention center.

Parking apps can also help you find available spots in nearby parking lots and garages in real time.

SIXT pro tip: Parking garages are much more plentiful in Miami than parking lots, unless you’re headed to Miami Beach. To save money on parking, we recommend looking for public garages in your desired destination.

Where to find on-street parking in Miami

If you don’t want to pay for parking in a garage or a lot, you can also find on-street parking in Miami. This city has around 9000 on-street parking spots, but most of them are metered, so you’ll need to pay attention to time restrictions.

A car parked on the side of the street next to a parking meter in Miami.

Most of the meters run from 8 a.m. until midnight, but there will be some permit zones and zones with no-parking days due to street cleaning. Meters usually accept coins, credit, and debit cards, while some may also accept dollar bills. Meters typically run from 7 a.m. until 2 a.m.

You can find metered street parking in Miami in the following areas:

  • Downtown Miami: There is metered parking along Biscayne Boulevard and near the Port.
  • South Beach: Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive in Miami Beach have metered parking spots for $4 per hour.* Enforcement hours run from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m.
  • Wynwood: There is limited metered parking available in this neighborhood along NW 36th and NE 29th.
  • Brickell: Limited metered parking is available in this area, usually along SE 15th.

SIXT pro tip: If you’re heading to Miami Beach and looking for street parking, it might be better to park in the North Beach area, as these meters are typically about $1 cheaper per hour* than meters in South Beach.

Where to find free parking in Miami

Don’t want to pay for parking in Miami? You’re in luck—there are a select few areas where you can find free parking. The Coconut Grove and Coral Gables areas usually offer free parking in designated zones. If you’re looking for free parking in Downtown Miami or Miami Beach, it’s best to download ParkMobile or SpotHero to find free spots.

SIXT pro tip: You can also access free parking in Miami if you park in metered spots outside of enforcement hours, and some of the garages we mentioned above give you the first 2 hours of parking free. Brickell City Centre also has an underground garage where the first 2 hours are free*.

Your last option for free parking in Miami is to use one of the city’s Park and Ride lots. These lots are open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and no overnight parking is allowed. You can park in these lots free of charge and use the Metrobus to get to your final destination. Some of the most convenient Park and Ride lots are listed below:

  • Tamiami Station Park and Ride: This lot is located at 14710 SW 8th Street. Park and then ride the 837 Express Bus* to downtown Miami.

The New York City Marathon is one of the world’s most prestigious races, drawing thousands of
runners and millions of spectators to the city’s five boroughs every fall. With the excitement of
race day comes increased traffic and road closures, but driving and parking in NYC can still be
manageable with the right planning.

Whether you’re participating in the race or a spectator cheering on loved ones, strategizing
your route and parking options in advance will help ensure a smooth experience. This guide
covers everything you need to know – including the marathon’s date, route, areas to avoid, and
the best parking options.

Key Details About the NYC Marathon

The NYC Marathon usually takes place on the first Sunday of November, with this year’s race
scheduled for November 2, 2025. The race then kicks off in waves, starting around 8:00 a.m. for
wheelchair athletes and 9:10 a.m. for the first wave of runners.

Spanning all five boroughs, the marathon course begins on Staten Island, crosses the
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, winds through Brooklyn and Queens, heads into Manhattan, loops
through the Bronx, with runners crossing the finish line in Central Park.

As one of the world’s largest marathons, the event sees over 55,000 runners, over 10,000
volunteers, and nearly two million spectators lining the streets. With major road closures and
heavy foot and vehicle traffic, it’s crucial to plan ahead – especially when it comes to parking and transportation.

NYC Marathon Road Closures

The NYC Marathon brings road closures and traffic restrictions across all five
boroughs, making driving in the city particularly challenging in the days leading up to, and day
of, the big race. However, with proper planning, you can tackle road closures with ease.

One of the biggest impacts is the full closure of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on race
morning. The upper level closes entirely the night before, with both levels remaining shut to all
traffic until early afternoon on race day. Drivers heading to or from Staten Island should use
alternative routes such as the Bayonne Bridge or Goethals Bridge instead to avoid delays.
Additionally, other key closures include – but are not limited to – the following:

  • FDR Drive: Typically closed intermittently on race day.
  • 5th Avenue: Usually closed from 142nd Street to 124th Street, including a multitude of cross streets.
  • First Avenue & Willis Avenue Bridge: There are heavy restrictions across this area when runners make their way from Manhattan to the Bronx.
  • Queensboro Bridge: All eastbound lanes, bicycle, and pedestrian paths are typically closed throughout the race.

Of course, beyond these major road closures, there are numerous local streets across Staten
Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx that will be gridlocked or inaccessible to
vehicles on race day. Anyone planning on driving on race day should plan ahead, and allow extra
travel time to avoid congestion.

Where to Park for the NYC Marathon

Finding parking on race day can be a challenge, but smart parking strategies can help you avoid
travel headaches. The best approach is to take steps to find a parking garage near key
locations if you want to be as close to the action as possible.

Best Parking Garages Near Key Locations

If you’re driving into and parking in Manhattan for marathon day, parking near the race route
can make it easier to reach key viewing spots.
Consider these conveniently located garages within walking distance of the action:

  • Dock Parking – 330 W 58th St: Just steps from Columbus Circle, this garage provides quick access to the marathon’s final miles.
  • GMC Park – 210 Central Park S: Located right by the park, this garage is ideal for those wanting to watch runners as they enter the home stretch of the race.

Street Parking Rules and Regulations

Street parking in NYC is heavily restricted before and on marathon day, with a multitude of
streets being shut down and temporary parking bans put in place. However, if you do want to
attempt to park on the street, check the NYC Department of Transportation website ahead of
race day for updated restrictions.

Car Rental Options for Out of State Travelers

If you’re traveling to NYC for the marathon and need a rental car, the most convenient options are at major airports and rental locations in the area:

Driving in NYC on marathon day can be a unique experience, and with the right planning, it can
be a smooth and convenient way to navigate the city. Renting a car gives you flexibility and
control over your schedule – allowing you to arrive early, park in a strategic location, and avoid
the crowds. While some roads will be closed, planning your route ahead of time and using
alternative streets will help you avoid delays and enjoy the event stress-free.

Final Tips for a Smooth NYC Marathon Day

Navigating New York City on marathon day requires careful planning – arrive early and expect
heavy traffic and road closures throughout the five boroughs. If driving, always have a backup
parking option as garages tend to fill up quickly.

a.m. for the first wave of runners and wheelchair athletes, with the final wave taking off around
8:35 a.m.

Spanning 29 neighborhoods, the marathon course begins in Grant Park, with runners passing

Chicago Marathon Road Closures

The Chicago Marathon does bring widespread road closures and traffic restrictions across the city,
which may impact driving in the days leading up to, and day of, the big race.

One of the most significant closures is Columbus Drive, which serves as both the start
and finish line on race day. Drivers should also expect full closures from Roosevelt Road to

  • Loop Parking Garages: Various garages in downtown Chicago provide good alternatives, but be prepared for a longer walk due to street closures.

Street Parking Rules and Regulations

Street parking is extremely limited before and on marathon day, with a multitude of streets
